how do i start selling on ebay after i’ve been buying for a while?

February 7th, 2013 2 comments

i have an account already on ebay and have been buying stuff for 3 months on there i think. i want to start selling on there and i would sign up for paypal using my debit card. after i sign up for paypal what do i do to start selling on ebay?

btw, how much does ebay take away from you when you sell something? or when do they take away money and how much?

Read the "how to start selling" tutorial on Ebay would be my advice. There is a lot you need to learn and easy mistakes to avoid making. The sellers fees are listed clearly there, it depends on your starting price, whether you use Buy It Now or auction format etc. You may have to pay an insertion fee? Definitely a Final Value Fee (depends on the final selling price) and a fee to Paypal for accepting a payment. Bear these things in mind when selling :-

See how much similar items are selling for by "watching" one in My Ebay and check after the auction ends. It might not be worth your while bothering for low value items once the fees are paid.

Take a really good clear photograph to upload, don’t copy off the internet.

Weigh the item in its packaging before you work out the P&P, packaging can weigh heavy.

Heavy items do not sell well, people won’t pay a fortune for P&P so think before you sell esp. books which can be quite heavy.

Describe any defects/faults in full it saves having to issue a refund later on to an unhappy buyer.

Always get proof of posting stamped at the post office (this is free, not the same as registered post) because buyers can sometimes turn round and say an item never arrived. If you can scan/email proof of posting to them and have a clear refund policy stated on the auction this takes the wind out of their sales.

Always send expensive items by registered post only, choose that option from the list and sort out how much this is before you list the item.

Good communication is the key on Ebay, communicate with your buyers, answer questions promptly and keep them informed when you post the item.

setting up ebay business, advice to get started?

I would appreciate any tips, we are trying to sell wrestling masks.

Hi, i disagree with Fairdo4all, Yes this is a niche market but there still is a market. Sales will be slow if you Only sale on ebay, so to increase chances of sales you should list your products in as many places as possible.

You should check this out – www.esellution.co.uk

I use them for my online store – Basically you can list your products, brands, categories, inventory (How many of each item you have), prices for each product, it keeps track of all orders and lets you manage them easily, you get a statistics page so you can see how many times an item has been viewed, how many sales each item has made, etc.

The software creates you your online store and comes complete with templates that you just click and it changes your site instantly, but i know that Esellution also do custom templates for clients too.

The reason i love this software as well is you dont need to know any sort of coding crap to use it, its all fully automated and simple. Also its integrated with Ebay, Amazon, Facebook and a whole load of other sites so when you update a product, list a new one, change anything, make a sale etc, it updates all your stores meaning you dont need to login to each site individualy and update everything on each one so it saves you loads of time meaning you can take more orders and make more money. The orders page tracks all orders too so it acts as a bookeeping system that is printable.

You can setup your payment method with this too (list Paypal email) or if you prefer people to pay via credit/debit card, and the money goes straight into your account when they make a purchase. I would recommend the Paypal payment method with this software as Paypal keep their own records too just incase of disagreements between you and your customer you will have back up 😀

Hope this helped 🙂

How much do I have to pay to list something on eBay and how much is it per day?

November 18th, 2012 4 comments

Ive never sell anything on eBay only bought,I need to know if I really have to pay $1 a day for each item I have listed and all the fees. Thanks

I’ve not familiar with having to pay $1 a day. In my experience the cost to sell on ebay varies on how you list your item. Normally when you list an item, you are charged an ‘insertion fee’ based on the starting price you choose. This includes one free picture and the listing runs for 7 days. If you choose any ‘upgrades’, for instance using more pictures, there are additional ‘upgrading fees’. You are able to see your fees and any upgrade fees on the listing form before you submit your listing. If your item does not sell, you do not have to pay the normal insertion fee. However, presently ebay is offering 50 _free_ insertion fees a month. This sounds like a good deal BUT, if your item sells, you are charged a 9.0% ‘final value fee’ on that amount _plus_ now your shipping costs are adding to the ‘final value fee’! As you might know, shipping is usually pretty expensive so now this adds quite a bit more to the ‘final value fee’ of each item!

Also, ebay owns Paypal and you are forced to use Paypal to receive payment. So in addition to paying ‘final value fees including shipping costs’ to ebay, you have to pay fees on the same amount to Paypal also – kinda like double jeopardy!

I’ve sold on ebay for over 10 years but when I started having to pay fees to ebay and paypal on my shipping costs, I quit….

I would recommend starting with Craigslist.com which is local and completely free, plus you can relist your item(s) as often as needed and there is no shipping involved. Hopefully there is one in your city. There are a lot of spammers on Craigslist that just want you to reply to get your email address to hustle. I avoid that by ‘hiding’ my email and using my telephone number only. Ironically, ebay recently bought a local and free site very much like Craigslist. It’s ‘eBay Classifieds’… as ‘Nashville eBay Classifieds’. It is easier to use than Craigslist but not as well known yet. Another suggestion is to check Yahoo Groups in your city for free _online_ yard or garage sale classified sites. I have four in my area.

Selling Tip: If you do use ebay, they often suggests sellers begin their starting price at 99¢ to encourage bidding. I see that as a definite way to lose money, particularly if only one person happens to bid on your item. So set your starting price at the least amount that you are willing to accept for your item and be aware that ebay and Paypal fees will run over 10%.

Hope this helps…

Why is it taking so long to process paypal payment from ebay sales?

July 13th, 2012 1 comment

I have started selling on ebay and I’m selling about 25 – 50 items on ebay a day. However I find hours are being spent in paypal looking at what customers orders printing them shipping labels and reading their notes they wrote. For example I have my own custom label (sku #) in ebay for an item I’m selling so when I receive a payment from a customer from paypal I need to login to paypal copy down their address and type in the item # on ebay to find out what they ordered. Where as if paypal has just used my custom label / sku # I would be able to find out right away what the customer ordered without having to check on ebay. This process is taking to long. What are other sellers doing?

Add your sku number to the title line of the auction, the paypal payment will always reference the title of the auction.

Example – Men’s Levi 550 Size 34 x 34 Sku #3502-0210

Money sent though paypal and ebay sellers say they have got nothing yet. Whats going on?

July 9th, 2012 1 comment

Well this is what is happening, I have purchased $60 worth of goods from Ebay off several different suppliers. At the time i went to pay the the people i actually had $0.00 in my paypal, My mum said i can still pay for the items and paypal will take it as a credit thing. Two days later i put $60 in the paypal account, i waited for the payments to clear for several days and then it saild Declined "Insufficient funds"

I used the pay now button from ebay to pay with paypal the first time, the second time i tried to pay (With the money now on my paypal) I could not click on the pay now button from ebay so i simply clicked the "Send money" on paypal to the sellers correct payment email address. All good and well, But they still say they have not received payments and will cancel the sale if the money does not clear in 4 days.

Paypal said that the payment was sent on the 3rd of Feb its now the 17th of Feb! whats going on?

Is it possible to claim back that money if i may of sent it to a email address that is wrong or anything like that?

Thanks in advance,

This has been happening to me.

I changed my primary email with Ebay and Paypal. I had to go into my Ebay store and change that email address on every item in my store.
You made a purchase, and Paypal defaults BACK to the old email address, which is no longer connected to my account. You send the money there, I cannot get it.
Then you have all the hoops to jump through to fix the problem.

First- Go to the item and check on payment. It should send you to the Paypal transaction. If it says that seller has not claimed the money, then BINGO! it went to the wrong address.

Second- Cancel the payment.

Third- Contact the seller and ask for the correct email address to make payment to, or better yet, ask for a new invoice with the correct email.

Fourth – Make payment again.

Would be so much easier if Ebay and Paypal were not so greedy that they accept payment to email addresses without accounts.

Why Your eBay Business Needs PayPal

January 8th, 2012 2 comments

While it seems like a no brainer, there are still dropshippers who neglect to use the leverage that PayPal brings to their eBay business. In today’s online marketplace, this feature is seen by many as a necessity, and without it, dropshippers leave a large percentage of their potential profits on the table.

Even before eBay acquired PayPal, the two companies were used hand in hand by both buyers and sellers on the internet. Today, as one company, the two interact more than ever, and accepting PayPal payments is absolutely crucial for your eBay business. If a dropshipper neglects to accept PayPal as a means of payment for his or her items, he or she makes it much harder to create a steady income stream from dropshipping, and achieving Powerseller status becomes a much more difficult task.

PayPal makes eBay transactions incredibly easy. Because many PayPal accounts are already funded with cash, most eBay buyers don’t even see the money that leaves their accounts. This smooth, easy payment process encourages sales. Those who use PayPal prefer to use it over credit cards or personal checks, because it is much faster and easier for the buyer. Therefore, if you do not accept PayPal payments in your auctions, you are likely to be passed over by perspective buyers, and they will buy from someone who accepts PayPal payment even if the price is higher. Yes, many will pay more for the luxury of paying via PayPal. Therefore, if YOU are the one that accepts this type of payment, and your competitor does not, you may even receive a higher price.

However, if you neglect to accept PayPal payments, there were no doubt be less people bidding on your item, which naturally decreases the amount that you will receive for you product. Also, remember that people are sometimes more likely to bid on items that already have several bids, and accepting PayPal can encourage this idea to work in your favor.

Using PayPal is also beneficial to you because it allows you to receive payment much faster and, therefore, gives you the green light to ship sooner. Faster shipment means the potential of receiving a better feedback rating, and it snowballs from there. PayPal also allows you deposit the funds directly into your bank account. You could literally sell an item on eBay and have the money in your hand in less than an hour.

If you insist on only accepting personal checks and other slow methods of payments, you will not receive as many bids. In return, you will not get as much as you could for your items. You will make fewer sales, and payment will be slower. In return, you will receive fewer points for positive feedback, and your growth will be stunted.

If you want to seriously compete in the eBay marketplace and use dropshipping as a means to create a stream of income, implementing PayPal into your business is not only necessary, but absolutely essential to your success.
