Will selling car on eBay bring the highest price?

November 30th, 2012 Leave a comment Go to comments

I put an ad on Craigslist and got an offer for $1900. I declined.

I went to Carmax and they offered $2400. I have a week to decide.

If I sell my car on eBay will I get more? I am hoping to get over $3000 for my 2002 Honda Passport LX with 170k miles.

Yes and no.

Since you set the "reserve" price on eBay (the lowest price you will accept before the auction can be "won"), then you determine what the selling price is before the auction even starts. If the bidding does not reach the reserve price, then you don’t sell it… plain and simple. If the reserve price is met, then it’s sold when the auction ends.

So, if you set the reserve at $3000, and the bidding never reaches that amount, you keep it and try again or choose an alternate method of sale.

Well, find our what the Kelly Blue Book value for your car is first. See http://www.kbb.org. People study the blue book values before they buy used cars. You probably will not do better on Ebay.

Depending on condition and specific options according to Kelly Blue Book this vehicle is worth between about $3000 to $3800. However, getting someone to actually buy this vehicle for this price, sight unseen is another thing.

Personally, I would NEVER buy any vehicle that I could not look at with my own eyes and test drive BEFORE I paid one dime for it. But who knows. They say there is a sucker born every minute.

if it were me, I’d take the Carmax offer. a private buyer might come back if anything goes wrong. 170k is a lot of miles. people buying on ebay are looking for bargains
