Any tips on selling a car on ebay please!?

July 1st, 2012 8 comments

I am considering putting my car on ebay as I am not having much luck with the autotrader in the current climate, but have never done it before!
Would you recommend it and what tips/secrets are there to get me a sale? The car is worth around £9000 if that’s any help.
Cheers.

I recently listed my brothers car on ebay for him, what it did for was provide a "shop window" whereby we got over 400 views of the car’s listing and a third more cash than the reserve! As the car was listed locally, practically everyone wanted to pay cash to end the auction which was how the car eventually sold.

Make sure you list all details about the car (except Reg No), honestly, as the person looking at your car will probably know any faults etc. to look for. If the car is good then it will sell itself.

Provide good pictures

Put a reserve on it, but DON’T disclose it no matter how much bidders hassle you.

Think twice about listing your phone number as no end of idiots will call simply asking for the same info that’s in the listing! and give you the line "I’ve got cash in my pocket & can be there tonight for £xx which is much lower than the actual book value…mostly traders.

Put in a disclaimer at the end of your listing stating that "if your reserve or more is met locally then you have the right to end the auction" to cover yourself if you need to cancel the auction early.

The one major downside is the fees, which are around 9% upon completion of sale.

We listed the car for 7 days, it sold on day 6 for cash outside of ebay, so only cost £12 fees for a national ad 🙂

Information Regarding Tips Selling Cars Ebay

Selling a car on Ebay works much the same as selling any item, with the addition of a few extra steps to protect yourself and your buyer. Your first order of business, if you have not done so already, is to register an account with Ebay.

With that out of the way, you will need to gather together all relevant information about your vehicle. In addition to your title / registration, try and gather maintenance and repair receipts as well. Now is also a good time to begin taking photos. As a general rule, the more the better. Take photos of all four sides of the vehicle, close ups of any body damage, the engine compartment, and the interior. Include a photo of the odometer reading. Photos should be well focused and free of any distractions that draw your viewers attention away from the car. Good results can often be obtained on a slightly overcast day in an empty parking lot.

Information Regarding Selling On Craigslist

If you are new to selling a used car on Craigslist, you may be unsure how to proceed. Stop right now. Whatever you do, don’t mosey on over to Craigslist and post “I have a red truck for sale.” This will get you nowhere and it does nothing but waste your time and the time of everyone who reads your ad.

So what should you do when selling a car on Craigslist?
