How to Turn Ebay ® Browsers Into Buyers: a Call to Action

February 17th, 2013 No comments

During my time as an eBay ® consultant , people have asked me many questions. Often, people ask questions that are contrary to the success of their business, and it’s my job to redirect their thoughts in a more appropriate direction.

Consider the following question: “I have all of my items listed and I’m not getting as many bids as I’d expected, should I lower my pricing?”

I cringe when I hear this question, yet I understand why people ask it. It’s logical that, if something isn’t selling, it must be too expensive, right? Wrong!

There are several answers to this question, none of which are to lower the price. Today, I’m going to address a key factor that anyone can implement to increase their sales––a call to action in their item description.

What is a call to action?

A call to action is a very simple word or phrase that tells your “browser” what they should do next. This may seem obvious, but one of the biggest mistakes you can make as an eBay seller is to sit back and “hope” that your browser will become a buyer.

It is important to put aside your need to be subtle in your ads. Instead, come right out and tell your potential customer what they should do next. You can use words or phrases such as the following:

*Bid Now and Save Money

*Bid Now, Don’t Miss Out on This Incredible Deal

*Buy Now, Before the Price Gets Too High

*Bid Now, Quantities Are Limited and Moving Fast

*This Is a Hard-to-Find Item, Bid While It’s Still Here

You get the idea. Your product may have a special element, which will make this part easy. But, even if your product isn’t unique, you can still come up with an effective call to action.

Increase your sales immediately.

Using a call to action is not something new and it is more than just an idea. This method of selling has been repeatedly tested over time. Experts report that you will increase your sales by 80% simply by telling your browsers what to do next.

Bonus Tip.

Remember, you also have the option of giving potential customers more than one call to action. For example, assume that you have an eBay ® business selling collectible trains and you get a visitor who is looking for one particular item. This browser comes to one of your listings and sees that it isn’t the one they’re seeking. Because your “buy now” call to action might not work here, you’ve lost this person as a customer, right? Wrong again.

You have two things you can do at this point. The first is pretty well known and practiced, which is to direct the potential customer to a complete list of related items. Provide a call to action, such as, “If this item isn’t what you’re looking for, please click here (link to your entire list of auctions on eBay ® ) to see all of my train-related listings.”

The second, and my favorite, is to invite potential customers to sign up for free information. Provide a call to action, such as, Click Here

to visit my About Me page and discover how to receive free, weekly tips about buying collectible trains on eBay without getting scammed.” Collecting names of those who are in the market for your type of product is absolutely priceless.

How can I include selling on Ebay under the "work experience" section of a resume?

December 18th, 2012 7 comments

I haven’t had a traditional job for several years and the only "job" if I could call it that during this time has been selling various merchandise on Ebay. I would like to list this under the "work experience" category of a resume but I don’t know how to do it in order for it to look credible. First of all I would like to know – does selling on ebay count as work? Whether it does or doesn’t, I would really appreciate some tips on how to write it in my resume. Is there a way to phrase it so that prospective employers will see this as a real job?

Sounds to me that you were a small business owner selling items on eBay. You could also be called a broker if you got your items from other sources and then sold them.

You are part of the Internet Commerce Community, which is becoming a growing part of our economy. Just because you did it in the comfort of your own home doesn’t mean you weren’t working.

How many items did you sell, and what profit did you make? The answers to these questions can look very good on a resume, especially if you are looking for work with a company that has an Internet presence, and now days what company doesn’t.

You have had to handle issues like self-employment tax, handling credit card transactions, shipping material to customers and dealing with the public via email. If you are looking for a job in sales then that sounds like some good experience to me.

What is your performance rating; did you have any customers file a complaint against you? If you have a good rating, and that is easy to check on, then that is a good indication of your work performance and your history in dealing with the public, as well as a measure of your honesty and sense of fair play. The longer your history the better an indication that will be.

How did you handle customer complaints? What actions did you have to take to satisfy them? What were their responses afterwards? Did you have any customers that you did a lot of business with, or any companies? Could you ask these people to give you a reference for a future employer? Could they give you a contact number or email so that future employers may ask them questions about you?

Part of making a good resume is being creative enough to make what experience you have look valid, without being caught in a lie. You simply need to think outside of the box and come up with some good ideas. Doing this is a mark of creativity and original thinking and reflects well upon you. You don’t have to tell your employer that you were fired and couldn’t find a job, you only have to say that you needed some time to be at home so you temporarily left the work force. This eBay business you had was only a side line, you always intended to return to the work force and you are interested in working with this company. You still have this business running (or you can easily restart it) the fact that you want to re-enter the work force and obtain a conventional job is just proof that you are eager to work. You have had some time to rest and now you want to get back to work. You are fresh and ready to go. Donald Trump will be the first one to tell you that in business you need to turn your liabilities into strengths. His producers will be the first to tell you that a lot of what you do is in your appearance, your show. What the public (or a future employer) sees should be the best and you want to make anything you did like it was worthy of doing.

How to Convert Ebay Surfers Into Bidders

February 25th, 2012 No comments

Do you know the phrase “A Call To Action”? Well, using “A Call To Action” on your eBay Auction could help increase your sales almost immediately. As outlined in my book “eBay Marketing Wholesale SourcePak” having the right product, at the right price is crucial. But, what else can you do to entice those eBay surfers to become a bidder? Here is one key factor anyone can implement on their auctions to help increase their sales – it’s called ” A Call To Action!”

Some of you may be asking “What is “A Call To Action?” Well it’s a simple phrase that you would add to your auction description. This phrase should tell your potential bidder what they should do next. I know what your thinking, “Don’t they know what to do next?” But really, you do need to tell people what it is you expect them to do. You can not depend on or assume that an auction surfer is automatically going to become a bidder without telling him/her what you want them to do. You need to come right out and tell them to buy. And why they should buy. Here are some examples of phrases you could use to entice that potential bidder to take action now and make a bid.

– Bid Now! Save Money!

– Buy Now and Save on Shipping!

– Bid Now! Don’t Miss This Incredible Deal!

– Buy Now! Quantities are Limited!

– Bid Now! One Of A Kind!

– Bid Now! Collectors Item!

You get the idea. If you have what that surfer is looking for any of the above phrases will entice him/her to make a bid now. And this method is not something new. Retail stores have been using this for years. You know any of the big sales where the advertisement says something like “And don’t wait, Quantities are Limited!” This method is time tested. Some experts report you can increase your sales by 50% simply by telling those who are just surfing your auction page what you want them to do.

You can also use more then one call to action. And use them for different reasons in your auction. Say you use one of the above. Bid Now! One of a Kind! But what if this surfer is not interested in this item for auction. Well, don’t let him/her leave without inviting him/her to view your other auctions. Say something like “If you don’t see what you are looking for here – please visit my other auctions” and create a link to your other auctions, possibly your “me page” which lists all the auctions you have running.

Try this method on your next auction.

Happy Selling!

Selling Item On Ebay: An Introduction

January 8th, 2012 3 comments

The phrase “selling item on eBay” can be understood from two different angles. Since I don’t know from which angle you are viewing it, I will talk about both.

One can understand selling item on eBay as, “I want to sell an item on eBay.” On the other hand, one can also understand selling item on eBay as, “What are the items that are selling on eBay?”

First, let me talk about selling item on eBay from the perspective of you wanting to sell items on eBay.

To sell items on eBay, you need to be a registered member of eBay and you need to register as a seller.

The seller registration process involves you verifying your identity, selecting the way you will be paying your seller fees, and you need to offer either PayPal or a merchant account credit card as payment options for your buyers.

The process of becoming a seller is free of charge.

It is also important to read and understand the rules for sellers. eBay has comprehensive help available that tells you all the rules, give you seller tips, and gives you a seller checklist.

Now, let’s talk about selling item on eBay from the angle of what items are selling on eBay.

One would think that almost any item sells on eBay. That would be true, but some items do sell better than others.

To make money selling items on eBay, you need to focus on those that are the better sellers.

One way to find out what items are selling on eBay is to simply study the main page of eBay. They highlight many items and item categories. You can be pretty sure those are items that sell very well on eBay.

eBay Pulse is also a great way to find the most popular items. eBay Pulse shows you the ten keywords that people search for most often overall and per item category.

If lots of people search for an item, you can be sure that the item is selling well.

I hope I’ve helped you in a small way to better understand selling item on eBay, regardless from which angle you were thinking about it before reading this.
