Would you buy handmade products on ebay and if so what?

December 12th, 2012 Leave a comment Go to comments

My boyfriend is a talented artist and he’s at university so is a little strapped for cash. What handmade products might you buy on ebay? Cards, paintings etc. Could you suggest anything he could make and sell?

Selling on eBay is a difficult task and requires a lot of time, dedication and patience; however for most people it’s fun and take it in a positive way.

I would say paintings. Everyone is always looking for nice art to hang in their home, but not pay the high prices.

maybe some jewelery. but only if it looks good.
my sister bought a handmade wallet from ebay too.
but make sure to take pictures of any handmade objects in a good spot. a badly taken picture on ebay immediately turns me off.

I might buy paintings, watercolors, drawings, pottery or sculptures. I would not buy craft items that most anyone could make.

I tend to buy handmade jewelry, but if that isn’t his thing I think I would consider some cute, unique paintings that were small and eye catching.
Maybe some quaint household objects could be sculpted and then sold as nic-nacs.

If you do get it up and running, please, give us a bell, I’d love to see what he has!

Paintings possibly, but not at very good prices. Most craft items do not sell well – what the craftsperson and their friends think is good and cool many people might consider as tat. On ebay you cannot see or feel the item and a photo can be no indication of quality.

I have a workmate who is of an artistic bent and is a fanatical re-cycler to help save the planet. SHE thinks her home is full of beautiful things [her words] that she has re-cycled, renovated and given a new life to. Most people being more used to furnishing their homes from High Street retailers would consider her home to be full of tatty junk!

I am an artist who sells on ebay.

Without a recognizable name, he will not get what he wants as in high prices for his paintings.

    What does sell well:

ATC’s – Artist Trading Cards – baseball card size works of art
ACEOS – samething but not limited only to that size.

What i would suggest is he doesnt put to much effort into his little handmade objects – expect a final sale price of under 20. so if he can turn them out quickly it can be worth it.

But if becomes attached, created a masterpiece, and then it sells for 6.50, he might be discouraged.

The real marketplace for handmade goods is etsy.com

I have a blog (very new) that is dedicated to arts marketing and ebay sales

you should check out this article if you plan on assisting in the sales
